Show LUTs on Set: What They Are and Why You Need One

A director walks up to the monitor at video village on the second setup of the day. The frame is flat, milky, and gray. Skin looks like clay, the sky is a dishwater smear, and the contrast that made the location worth booking is nowhere on screen. The director does not know what a log curve is, and should not have to. What they know is that the image looks wrong, and now you are spending capital reassuring a nervous client instead of shooting. That whole conversation is avoidable. You put a show LUT on the monitor and the picture snaps into a real, contrasty, color-accurate look. Nothing about the recording changes. You just stopped monitoring the container and started monitoring the intent.
Log is a container, not a look
Modern cinema cameras do not record a pretty picture. They record log, which is a way of packing the widest possible range of brightness into the file so the highlights and shadows both survive to the grade. S-Log3, Log-C, V-Log, and RED's Log3G10 are all doing the same job: trading a flat, low-contrast on-screen appearance for latitude. A log file holds detail from deep shadow to bright highlight that a normal display image would clip off at both ends.
The cost of that latitude is that log looks bad raw. Blacks sit lifted around 16 IRE instead of near zero. Whites top out in the mid-70s instead of pushing to 100. Saturation is pulled way down so no color channel clips early. On a monitor with no transform applied, that reads as washed out, gray, and slightly sickly. This is correct. It is the file doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The problem is that a human standing at the monitor cannot judge exposure, color, or mood off a log image, and neither can your client.
So log is the right thing to record and the wrong thing to look at. You need something sitting between the file and the glass that turns the container back into a picture. That something is a LUT.
The show LUT is the on-set translation
A LUT, a lookup table, is a set of instructions that takes every color value coming out of the camera and maps it to a new value for display. There are two layers stacked inside what people loosely call a show LUT, and it is worth separating them.
The first layer is the technical conversion, usually a Rec.709 transform. This is the boring, correct step that takes log and turns it into a standard, normal-contrast display image. It is not creative. It is the equivalent of translating a sentence into the language the monitor speaks.
The second layer is the creative look, the part that is actually yours. This is where you add the contrast curve, the color balance, the slight desaturation or the warm push or the teal shadows that define how this specific project is supposed to feel. Stack the creative look on top of the Rec.709 conversion and you have a show LUT: a single file, almost always a .cube, that everyone on the production monitors through so the whole set is looking at the same intended image.
That shared reference is the entire point. When the show LUT is on every monitor, the director, the gaffer, the client, and the DIT are all judging the same picture. Exposure decisions get made against the look you are actually delivering, not against a flat file nobody can read. A .cube LUT is small, portable, and identical on any device that loads it, which is why it became the standard hand-off object between the person who builds the look and the people who shoot through it.
Monitor LUT versus baked-in: the one distinction that matters
Here is the distinction that separates a protected pipeline from a wrecked one. A show LUT can live in one of two places, and only one of them is safe.
A monitoring LUT, sometimes called a viewing LUT, is applied only to the signal going out to the monitors. It is a viewing transform. The camera still records clean log to the card. The look you see on set is real and useful, but it is a pair of glasses over the file, not a change to the file. Pull the card, and the recording is still full-latitude log, ready for the colorist to do anything with.
A baked-in LUT is burned permanently into the recorded pixels. The camera writes the look into the file itself. What you saw is now what you have, forever. The lifted-highlight latitude that log was protecting is gone, clipped off and unrecoverable. The desaturation headroom is gone. If the look was slightly wrong, and on-set looks usually are, you are stuck with it.
On a real commercial or branded job, you almost never bake. The monitoring LUT gives you every benefit of a great on-set image with zero cost to the file. Baking exists for a few narrow cases, a fast-turnaround live event, a run-and-gun social piece where nobody will grade, a deliberate creative commitment made with the colorist in the room, but treating it as the default is how you hand your colorist a fight instead of a file. When in doubt, monitor the look and record the log.
What a show LUT actually protects
The muddy-monitor problem is the obvious one, but a show LUT protects four things that all cost real money when they break.
It protects client confidence. Video village is a sales floor whether you want it to be or not. A client watching a flat gray image reads risk, and a nervous client slows the day with questions and second-guessing. A client watching a finished-looking frame relaxes and lets you work. That is not cosmetic. That is schedule.
It protects exposure judgment. Your DP and DIT are setting stops off what the monitor shows. Judging exposure against a washed-out log image is guesswork. Judging it against the show LUT, ideally with false color and a waveform alongside, means the exposure decisions made on set are the exposure decisions that survive to the grade.
It protects continuity of intent. The show LUT is the record of what you meant. It travels to editorial as the reference for dailies and to the colorist as the starting point for the grade. Without it, the look lives only in the DP's head and gets reinvented, or lost, weeks later by someone who was not on set.
It protects the dailies experience. Editors, producers, and clients watch dailies through the LUT, so the cut looks like the film the whole way through post. Cutting against raw log is demoralizing and misleading, and it makes early client reviews harder than they need to be.
Where the LUT comes from and how it gets to the monitors
A show LUT is not something you grab off a hard drive at random. On a properly run job it comes from a short chain of decisions made before the shoot. A DP shoots a camera test, a colorist or DIT builds a look off that test, and the two of them agree on the .cube that becomes the show LUT for the project. On bigger jobs the look often rides as an ASC CDL, a small set of slope, offset, power, and saturation numbers, plus the base LUT. The advantage of a CDL is that it is portable, adjustable, and, crucially, not baked. The colorist can honor those exact numbers as the starting point and then keep working, because a CDL is a recipe rather than a burned-in result.
Getting the LUT onto the monitors is a hardware question. The cleanest path is loading the LUT into the camera itself and sending it out over a dedicated monitor SDI out, so the recorded signal stays log while the monitor feed carries the look. Another path is an inline LUT box between the camera and the monitor, which applies the look to that feed without touching the record path. A third is loading the LUT directly into a smart monitor. On a job with a DIT cart, the DIT can manage all of this live, adjust the CDL per setup, and keep the on-set look and the eventual grade in sync.
Whatever the path, the discipline that matters is naming and versioning. A show LUT should have a clear name, a version number, and one source of truth on the DIT cart. Three slightly different LUTs floating around set, each loaded on a different monitor, is worse than no LUT at all, because now every department is judging a different picture and nobody knows which one editorial will actually see. A DIT for a commercial day in the Dallas and Fort Worth market runs somewhere in the range of 650 to 950 dollars, and a large part of what you are buying is exactly this: one authoritative look, correctly loaded, consistently managed, and cleanly handed to post.
When you skip it, and what it costs
Skip the show LUT and the failures are predictable. The client spends the day anxious about footage that is fine. Your DP misjudges an exposure because the flat image hid a clipped window that false color would have caught. Editorial cuts for two weeks against gray log and everyone quietly assumes the project looks flat. Then the footage reaches the colorist with no reference for what any of it was supposed to be, and the grade becomes archaeology instead of finishing.
Bake the look instead of monitoring it and the failure is quieter but worse. Everything looks great on set, and then the colorist opens a file with the highlights already gone and the saturation already locked, and the latitude you paid a cinema camera to capture is not there. The grade stops being creative and becomes damage control.
None of this is exotic. A show LUT is a small file and a few minutes of setup, and it is the difference between a set that trusts its monitors and a set that argues with them. Build the look before the shoot, monitor it and never bake it, keep one versioned source of truth, and hand it to the colorist alongside clean log. Do that and the picture the director saw on the second setup of the day is the picture that walks out of the grade.
