Shooting Vertical and Square Without a Reshoot

The brief lands with two lines that don't sound like they're in tension: a hero 16:9 spot for broadcast and connected TV, and a full slate of Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts cutdowns from the same shoot day, no separate budget for a second unit. That request is now routine on commercial jobs, and it puts the DP in a specific bind: shoot for the wide frame and the vertical versions will look like an afterthought, or plan for both from the first camera setup and protect the entire deliverable slate in one day.
The naive answer, crop the finished 16:9 master down to 9:16, doesn't survive contact with the math. A standard 16:9 frame cropped straight to a 9:16 vertical throws away roughly 68 percent of the horizontal pixel count, keeping only about a third. What's left is either a tight, already-pre-composed shot that happens to survive the crop, or a heavily digitally zoomed frame that looks soft next to native footage. Neither is what an editor wants to hand a client who's paying for a premium social package, and neither is a plan, it's a hope that the composition happens to work out.
Open Gate: Capturing More Than You'll Deliver
The actual fix starts at the sensor, not in the edit. Current cinema cameras can record more of the sensor's physical area than a 16:9 deliverable uses, a mode generally called open gate or full-sensor capture, and that extra vertical resolution is what makes a real 9:16 crop possible without upscaling or digital zoom.
ARRI's Alexa 35 is the clearest example of a manufacturer building this in on purpose. Its open gate mode records the full 4.6K sensor at 4608 by 3164 pixels, a 3:2 ratio, against a standard 16:9 deliverable that only uses roughly 2160 to 2592 pixels of vertical resolution. That difference is real headroom, enough to pull a clean vertical crop from the same take without softening the image. ARRI's own materials frame this directly as multi-deliverable insurance, protecting the main theatrical or broadcast frame while giving editors room to cut 16:9, vertical, or square versions from a single capture. ARRI sells a dedicated Vertical Format Set for the Alexa 35 and Mini LF, a rotated top plate, baseplate, and viewfinder adapter, specifically for productions that want to physically orient the body for a true vertical-first capture rather than relying on crop alone.
RED's approach runs through the same principle from a different angle. The V-Raptor 8K VV can record the full 8K frame and crop internally to 4K or 1080p without a quality loss, which gives an editor a comparable amount of reframing room inside post. Komodo's 6K sensor, with its 1.33x crop factor relative to full frame, offers a similar kind of oversized capture relative to a typical 16:9 delivery spec. Sony added a specific tool to this conversation with FX6 firmware 4.0, which lets an operator crop a 16:9 frame directly out of the camera's full 3:2 sensor area, matching a capability that already existed on Venice 2. None of these approaches are identical in execution, but they share the same underlying logic: capture more sensor than the primary deliverable needs, and the vertical and square versions come out of real captured pixels instead of a digital guess.
Framing Discipline Is Where the Plan Actually Lives
Open gate capture only pays off if the DP composes with the tighter frame in mind during the shoot, not after. That means, in practice, framing loose enough that the subject sits centered or within a zone that reads cleanly in both 16:9 and 9:16, and resisting the instinct to push a subject to the edge of frame for a dynamic wide composition that a vertical crop will simply cut off. Working DPs describe keeping deliberate headroom and side-room buffer specifically so the crop has somewhere to land, and current monitors support custom framing guide overlays that can show a 16:9 boundary and a 9:16 boundary on the same live image at once, so the composition decision happens in real time instead of getting discovered in the edit bay.
Platform-specific safe zones add another layer that most DPs never think about until an editor flags it. Vertical formats each protect different regions of the frame for platform UI, captions, and profile elements: Instagram Reels generally wants key text or faces kept clear of roughly the top 108 pixels and bottom 320 pixels of the frame, TikTok's safe zone runs tighter still, and Facebook Reels effectively treats only a narrow central column as guaranteed visible. These specific pixel figures shift as platforms update their apps, so they're worth re-checking against current platform documentation before locking a shot list, but the underlying discipline doesn't change: a face or a product that sits dead center in a 16:9 frame might land directly under a TikTok username overlay in the vertical cut if nobody planned for it.
Where the Technique Actually Breaks
This isn't a universal fix, and treating it like one is how a production ends up disappointed in post. Two-shots and multi-subject compositions are the clearest failure case: a wide two-shot that reads naturally in 16:9 forces characters into an unnaturally tight vertical frame, pushed close together or split across awkward depth planes that a director would never have blocked that way on purpose. Wide establishing shots lose a large amount of the visual information that made them work in the first place, a sweeping exterior or a full-room reveal simply doesn't survive a 9:16 crop with any of its original impact. And any composition built around graphics, lower-thirds, or on-screen text designed for a 16:9 canvas usually needs a dedicated redesign for vertical anyway, protection at the camera doesn't solve a problem that lives in the graphics package.
The honest fallback in these cases is a second pass, not a crop. A dedicated vertical-specific take, sometimes shot with a genuinely separate camera and operator running synced timecode alongside the primary unit, is the traditional answer when a shot's composition simply can't serve two aspect ratios at once. Where that's not in the budget, AI-driven reframe tools like Adobe's Auto Reframe, Runway's Expand Video, and platforms like OpusClip can track a subject and generate new edges to salvage a shot that wasn't protected during the shoot. These tools are real and improving, but they belong in the salvage category, a fix for the shot that got missed, not a substitute for planning the composition on the day.
The Actual Cost Math
There's no single authoritative day-rate figure for "shooting protected for multi-format" versus a standard single-format shoot, and any claim to the contrary should be treated skeptically. What the trade conversation consistently agrees on is the shape of the tradeoff: bundling every aspect-ratio deliverable into one well-planned shoot day, using open-gate capture and framing discipline, is meaningfully cheaper than the alternative of a dedicated second vertical unit or a full separate reshoot for social. One frequently cited campaign example in industry commentary describes a single shoot producing more than twenty social cutdowns across portrait, square, and vertical formats without a second shoot day, which is the actual target outcome of this whole approach: plan once, protect the frame on the day, and let post do editorial work instead of remedial work.
The discipline costs almost nothing extra when it's built into the plan from the first camera setup. It costs a full second unit, or a client's patience, when it gets treated as an edit-room problem to solve after the fact. A DP who walks onto set already knowing which shots need to survive three aspect ratios, and which ones are allowed to just be beautiful in 16:9 and get a dedicated vertical pass, is the one who delivers the full slate on schedule instead of explaining in the cut review why half the social package looks like an afterthought.
