Shoot Once, Deliver Everywhere: Aspect Ratios in 2026

A client approves the estimate and sends the final brief. Near the bottom, one line: "Final delivery in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, and 4:5." No note about extra shoot time. No line item for it. Just an assumption baked into the sentence that all four shapes fall out of the same footage for free.

They mostly can. That is the good news and the trap in the same breath. Four formats can come from one capture, but only if someone made that decision before the camera rolled. If nobody did, you either eat unbudgeted editorial hours reframing shots that were never built to be reframed, or you ship a vertical cut where your subject is sliced down the middle and the client's logo sits half off-screen. Multi-format delivery is not a post problem you solve later. It is a coverage problem you solve on set.

What "everywhere" actually means in 2026

Stop thinking of a campaign as a video. Think of it as a capture that has to survive being cut into shapes. In 2026 the standard delivery set for a commercial or branded piece looks something like this:

  • 16:9 (1920x1080 or 3840x2160): the horizontal master. YouTube, connected TV, web embeds, anything that plays landscape. This is almost always the format you actually shoot.
  • 9:16 (1080x1920): full-screen vertical. Reels, TikTok, Shorts, and Stories. The width-hungriest crop in the set and the one that chops people in half.
  • 4:5 (1080x1350): the feed workhorse. The tallest a portrait unit can run in an Instagram or Facebook feed without going full vertical, and it buys more screen height than a square.
  • 1:1 (1080x1080): the square. Losing ground to 4:5 but still specified for some paid placements and older feed templates.
  • 2.39:1 shows up when a brand wants a scope hero film, though that one trims height rather than width and behaves differently from the rest.

Two of these matter most because they fight each other. 16:9 is as wide as you will deliver, and 9:16 is as narrow. Everything else you frame lives somewhere on the spectrum between them. Protect the two extremes and the middle formats take care of themselves. A composition that holds up in the horizontal master and survives the vertical column will also survive 1:1 and 4:5, because those crops sit between the two.

The media reality behind the brief is worth saying plainly: for a lot of brands, most of the paid spend now goes behind the vertical and portrait units, not the horizontal one. The 16:9 you are so carefully lighting may be the format the fewest people actually watch. That does not mean you stop delivering it. It means you stop treating the vertical as the afterthought and start treating it as a first-class deliverable that has to be earned in the frame.

Protect-framing is a set decision, not a post decision

Protect-framing means composing the 16:9 so the essential action also survives the 9:16 crop. It is a decision the director, DP, and first AC make together at the monitor, and it costs nothing but attention.

The mechanics are simple. Center a 9:16 safe area inside the 16:9 frame. On a full-height vertical crop, that safe area is only about 32 percent of the frame width, a narrow column straight down the middle. Anything the vertical cut needs, the subject's face, the product, the logo, the reactable moment, has to live inside that column. The sides of the frame are yours for the horizontal cut and expendable for the vertical one. Frame with that in mind and the reframe is won before you shoot it.

Every serious monitor does this for you. SmallHD, the frame guides buried in a Sony or ARRI menu, most director's monitors: they will overlay 9:16, 1:1, and 4:5 guides right on the live image. Turn them on. If your monitor shows the guides and your talent is standing inside the vertical column, you already have your vertical. Here is what protect-framing actually changes about the shoot:

  • Blocking. A wide two-shot with people on opposite edges is a great 16:9 and a broken 9:16, because the vertical crop can only hold one of them. If you know a vertical cut is coming, stack or center your talent, cheat them toward the middle, or plan a dedicated setup for the vertical.
  • Lensing. Going a touch wider gives the vertical crop room to breathe and gives post something to work with. A tight horizontal single leaves nothing to recompose. The wider option keeps every format on the table.
  • Movement. A horizontal dolly that reveals the frame left to right reframes badly in vertical, where that motion mostly happens off the edges nobody sees. Vertical-friendly movement pushes in, tilts, or follows the subject rather than sweeping past them.
  • Text and lower-thirds. Titles, captions, and logos have to sit in the zone that survives every crop, which is the tightest one. A lower-third that is comfortable in 16:9 but falls outside the 9:16 column vanishes in the cut most people watch on a phone.

None of this requires more time. It requires deciding, before you roll, which formats are real and framing for the tightest one on the list.

What reframing actually costs

Say nobody protect-framed. The footage is beautiful and horizontal, and now three more shapes are due. Here is what that actually costs, because it is never zero.

Reframing is not free even with modern tools. Premiere's Auto Reframe, the reframing tools in DaVinci Resolve, and the AI reframe features in most editing systems will track a subject and keyframe a pan to keep them inside the vertical or square frame. On a simple single-subject shot, that gets you most of the way there. On anything with two subjects, fast motion, or tracked graphics, the automation guesses wrong and an editor has to fix it by hand, shot by shot.

A working rule of thumb for a finished 30 to 60 second spot:

  • Simple, single-subject, minimal motion: roughly a quarter of an editorial day per additional format.
  • Moderate, some camera movement and light graphics: half to two-thirds of a day per format.
  • Heavy, fast motion with tracked text and graphics: a full day or more per format, because every graphic has to be re-laid-out for the new shape, not just nudged over.

At a freelance commercial editor's rate of roughly $600 to $1,000 a day, three extra formats on a moderately complex spot lands somewhere between half a day and two days of work. Call it $400 to $2,000 that either sits in your estimate or comes out of your margin. On a campaign with ten hero deliverables and their cutdowns, that number stops being a rounding error and starts being a real line on the budget.

The hidden cost is worse than the hours. A reframe that was not planned for often just looks like a reframe: subjects drifting across the frame to stay in view, compositions that feel cropped because they were, negative space in all the wrong places. It reads as an afterthought because it was one. Protect-framing on set is the thing that lets the vertical look shot instead of salvaged, and no amount of editorial hours fully buys that back after the fact.

Shoot for headroom, but know what headroom costs

There is a second lever, and it is the one everyone reaches for first: shoot at higher resolution so you can crop in without losing quality. It works, and it has a cost people forget to price.

The math is friendly. A 4K UHD capture is 3840 by 2160. A full-height 9:16 slice out of that is 1215 by 2160, which downscales cleanly to a 1080 by 1920 vertical delivery with room to spare. Shoot 6K and that same vertical slice is around 1944 by 3456, enough to deliver a near-4K vertical or to reposition the crop and still finish clean. Shoot 8K and you can pull a full 4K vertical out of the middle of the frame and still have latitude to push in on top of it.

So resolution buys you repositioning room, which is real and useful. But it does not buy you composition. An 8K frame with your subject jammed against the left edge still loses them in a centered vertical crop. Resolution lets you slide the crop window across the frame; it does not invent a subject where the vertical needs one. Headroom is not a substitute for protect-framing. It is a complement to it, and it only pays off if the thing the vertical needs was somewhere near the middle to begin with.

The cost side is real too. 6K and 8K mean bigger files, heavier data management on set, more storage, and slower editorial. The DIT's day gets longer, the drives fill faster, and the editor's timeline gets heavier to scrub and render. Shooting big to crop later is a legitimate strategy, and often the right one, but it is a strategy with a line item, not a free pass. Price the storage and the post time honestly and it is usually still worth it. Just do not pretend it is free.

When to shoot native vertical instead

Sometimes the honest answer is to stop treating vertical as a crop at all. When 9:16 is the primary deliverable and 16:9 is the afterthought, which is increasingly true for social-first and creator-style campaigns, shoot the vertical natively and reframe outward instead of inward.

That can mean composing for 9:16 as the master and building the horizontal cut by filling the extra width with design, or running a second camera in portrait alongside the main horizontal angle, or simply shooting a dedicated vertical pass of the key setups. It costs a little more on set, a second angle or a few extra takes, and it saves the vertical from looking like a horizontal shot with the sides lopped off. If the client's media plan puts the majority of the spend behind vertical placements, framing the entire shoot around the horizontal master is optimizing for the format the fewest people will see.

The decision comes down to one question you ask before the shoot, not during the edit: which format carries this campaign? Build your coverage around that one, shoot it natively if it is vertical, and protect the others inside it. That single conversation, held at the right time, is what separates a shoot that delivers everywhere from a shoot that delivers one format cleanly and three formats apologetically.

One capture, four shapes, decided on set

One capture can deliver every format a 2026 campaign asks for. Whether it actually does is decided in three places, in this order: the conversation before the shoot about which formats are real, the frame guides on the monitor while you roll, and the resolution you chose to give post room to work. Reframing in the edit is the last and most expensive place to fix a problem that costs nothing to prevent on set.

So turn on the guides. Frame for the tightest crop on the delivery list. Shoot enough resolution to reposition, but never mistake resolution for composition. Do that, and "deliver everywhere" stops being the line at the bottom of the brief you quietly dread and becomes something you already handled before the camera ever rolled.
