LED vs. HMI vs. Tungsten: Choosing Fixtures on a Real Budget

A gaffer gets a call sheet with a line item that says "exterior day, hero product, 2 p.m. call." No location photos yet. No confirmation on which direction the building faces. The bid still has to name a lighting package, because the client needs a number before the tech scout happens. This is the moment the LED-versus-HMI-versus-tungsten decision actually gets made, not on set with the sun overhead, but two weeks earlier on a spreadsheet, with incomplete information and a client who wants the number today.
Most gear debates online treat this like a religious argument. It isn't. Each fixture family has a specific, provable reason to exist on a real job in 2026, and the reason has nothing to do with which one is newest.
HMI: Raw Output Per Amp, Still Undefeated
For big daylight work, HMI remains the efficiency benchmark. AbelCine's technical staff describe HMI as the "efficiency king" of set lighting, roughly three to four times brighter than tungsten per watt drawn, and the output gap against LED at the high end is still real. One lighting comparison guide put it bluntly: a single ARRI M18 can outproduce ten ARRI SkyPanel S60 LED panels combined at ten feet. That is the kind of number that explains why a car commercial shooting a hero exterior at midday still calls for HMI punch instead of a wall of LED panels, because matching or overpowering daylight from thirty feet away with a bounce or a diffusion frame in front of it takes raw lumens, and HMI still delivers more of them per amp than anything else on the truck.
The tradeoff is infrastructure. An 18K-and-up HMI package needs real power, which usually means a generator or a heavy tie-in, not a battery pack. A quiet 60kW/500A tow plant, the kind that shows up on a set that's running multiple big HMIs off one power source, has been quoted around $450 a day by at least one rental source, though that figure is a single data point and worth confirming against whichever generator company a given crew actually uses. Flicker used to be the other HMI liability at high shutter speeds, but flicker-free ballasts that convert the AC sine wave to a square wave have mostly solved that, and shooting closer to a 360-degree shutter angle helps mask whatever residual flicker remains at extreme frame rates.
Tungsten: The Narrow, Real Reason It Survives
Tungsten should be dead by now on paper. It draws more power for less output than either competitor and runs hot enough to make a small interior genuinely uncomfortable after an hour. It survives for one reason: a tungsten source has a Color Rendering Index of 100. Not "close to." Perfect, by definition, because CRI is measured against a tungsten reference source in the first place.
That matters more than a spec sheet number suggests, because CRI itself is a limited test, it only samples eight colors. TLCI samples twenty-four, including skin tones directly, and the newer TM-30 metric reports both a fidelity score and a saturation score instead of one blended number. High-end LED fixtures from ARRI and Aputure now post TLCI and CRI ratings north of 95, which sounds close enough to call it even. In practice, the number that actually predicts how skin renders under a given light isn't the headline CRI figure, it's the R9 value, the red-channel strength, and that's where cheaper LED panels still fall short even when their overall CRI score looks respectable. A tungsten Fresnel next to a practical lamp in a warm interior still renders a face in a way that some high-CRI LED fixtures approximate rather than match. It's a narrow use case. It's also a real one, and it's why a Mole-Richardson tungsten fresnel, which runs a few hundred dollars new, still has a place in a package built around a moody interior testimonial shoot instead of getting quietly replaced.
LED: Where It Already Won, and Where It's Catching Up Fast
LED already owns run-and-gun, battery-powered, and anything shot on a tight crew where rigging speed matters more than raw output. An Astera Titan Tube runs roughly twenty hours on battery and is weather-rated, which makes it the obvious call for a mobile setup where pulling a generator isn't realistic. Color-tunable LED panels, from ARRI's Orbiter line to Aputure's Nova and STORM series, let a gaffer dial exact color temperature and green/magenta correction from an app instead of racking gel, which saves real minutes on every setup change over the course of a shoot day.
What's shifted in the last year is the high end. Nanlux released the Evoke 5000B in mid-2025, rated at roughly 79,500 lux at five meters, and both the ASC's trade coverage and independent gear press described its output as approaching a 9kW HMI or a 24kW tungsten fixture. Aputure's LS 1200d Pro, rated above 83,000 lux at three meters, gets marketed directly as an 1,800-watt HMI replacement. ARRI's own Orbiter is described by the company's training materials as delivering output comparable to corresponding HMI systems in the same class. None of that means HMI is finished for big exterior work, the AbelCine ten-SkyPanel comparison above still holds against older LED generations, but the newest LED fixtures are closing a gap that looked much wider three years ago.
The clearest local evidence of this shift sits inside the DFW rental market itself. Dallas Lighting and Grip's own product page for the Aputure STORM XT52 pitches it directly against an 1,800-watt HMI, claiming comparable output at roughly 1,200 watts of draw. That's not a hypothetical from a manufacturer's lab, it's a Texas rental house telling working DPs that a battery-friendlier LED fixture now does a job that used to require an HMI and a generator tie-in.
What the Numbers Actually Cost
Rental pricing for lighting fixtures is inconsistent enough across sources that any number here should be treated as directional, not a quote. With that caveat stated plainly: an ARRI SkyPanel S360-C has been listed around €550 a day at a European rental house, roughly $595 at current exchange. ARRI Orbiter day rates found in this research ranged from $420 to $750 depending on the rental house, with a bare-head purchase price starting around $5,239 and a fully configured kit closer to $19,900. Aputure's LS 600D Pro runs roughly $145 to $158 a day to rent and about $1,890 to buy. The LS 1200D Pro rents closer to $200 a day and has been effectively superseded by the STORM 1200x, which lists new at $2,999, a meaningful drop from the fixture it replaces. On the tungsten side, a Mole-Richardson 5K Fresnel lists new for around $620 to $625. None of these figures should replace a quote from an actual rental desk. GLM's own posted rates are the number that matters for a real bid; everything above is market color gathered from public listings, useful for understanding the shape of the market, not for building a client-facing budget line.
The Decision GLM Actually Makes on a Call Sheet
Strip the marketing away and the decision tree is short. An exterior day shoot that needs to punch through or overpower sunlight still calls for HMI, because nothing else delivers that much output per amp of draw, and the generator cost is a rounding error against the alternative of underlighting a hero shot. An interior built around warm practicals, a home, a restaurant, a moody testimonial setup, still leans tungsten or a very specifically chosen high-CRI LED, because skin tone under warm practical light is the one place a spec sheet number can lie to you. A run-and-gun day, a social content sprint, anything shot by a two-or-three-person crew moving fast between locations, is an LED day by default, because battery power and app-controlled color correction save more time than raw output would buy back. And a big-budget exterior day that used to be an automatic HMI call is now, for the first time, a genuine coin flip if the fixture on the truck is a current-generation LED unit like the Evoke 5000B or an Orbiter array, because the output gap that used to make the decision easy has narrowed enough to make the power savings and rigging speed worth weighing seriously.
That's the honest version of the fixture debate. It isn't LED replacing everything else. It's three tools that each still win a specific job, with one of them, LED, quietly encroaching on territory the other two used to own outright. A gaffer who treats this as settled in either direction is going to either underlight a hero exterior or drag a generator to a job that never needed one.
