Focus Pulling: The Most Underrated Job on Set

A soft hero shot is a dead shot. The performance can be perfect, the light can be exactly what the director wanted, the grade can sing, and none of it matters if the eyes are half an inch out of focus. You cannot fix it in post. You cannot sharpen your way back to a plane that was never resolved. The take is gone, and if nobody caught it on the monitor, you find out in the edit when it is far too late to do anything about it.

The person standing between you and that outcome is the 1st AC, the first assistant camera, the focus puller. On most commercial sets they are the quietest department member with the highest failure cost. They rarely touch the creative conversation. They are not in the client's eyeline. And when they are good, their work is completely invisible, which is exactly why they get treated as a line item to trim when a budget gets tight. That is a mistake, and the math below is why.

What the First AC Actually Does

The 1st AC owns the lens and everything that happens in front of it optically. On a moving shot, they are pulling focus in real time, which means predicting where a subject will be a fraction of a second before they get there and turning a knob to match. On a locked shot, they are still riding focus against the smallest drift, a talent who leans in on a line, a slate that shifts weight, a hand that comes up into frame.

The rest of the job is the part nobody sees. Before a single take, the 1st AC has built and balanced the camera, checked back focus, seated the lens, set the ground glass or monitor markings, and run the wireless follow focus so it tracks cleanly with no lash or lag. They measure. A good AC does not guess distances, they pull a tape or run a laser and mark the floor. They keep the lens clean, swap glass between setups, and manage the camera's data and batteries so the camera never becomes the reason a take dies.

On a union job this sits inside a defined camera department: the operator frames and runs the move, the 1st AC pulls focus, the 2nd AC slates and manages the cards and paperwork, and a DIT handles the data downstream. On a lean commercial crew, one person may carry two or three of those hats. The focus responsibility does not get lighter when the crew gets smaller. It gets harder, because now the person pulling focus is also fighting three other fires.

Why Shallow Depth of Field Raises the Stakes

Here is the part that makes the job what it is. The look everyone wants, that creamy separated background where the subject floats off the wall, is produced by a shallow depth of field. Shallow depth of field means a thin plane of acceptable focus. Thin plane means almost no margin for error. The exact thing that makes the image look expensive is the exact thing that makes it hard to keep sharp.

Put real numbers on it. On a full-frame sensor with an 85mm lens at T2.8 and the subject 6 feet away, your total depth of field is under three inches. That is the entire zone, front to back, in which a face reads as sharp. Open that same lens up to T1.4 for the shallower, more cinematic look, and the zone collapses to under an inch. Now the talent can lean forward the width of two stacked quarters and their eyes are soft.

That is not an exaggeration, it is geometry. Depth of field is driven by four things: aperture, focal length, subject distance, and sensor size. Wider aperture, longer lens, closer subject, and larger sensor all push the margin thinner. The modern commercial toolkit, large-format cameras, fast primes, tight portrait focal lengths, is a toolkit built to make the focus puller's job as unforgiving as possible. Every choice that reads as premium spends the AC's margin.

This is why a director asking for "that shallow look" is, whether they know it or not, asking for a better focus puller. The two requests are the same request. You do not get the look for free. You buy it with somebody's ability to hold a plane a couple of inches thick against a moving human being.

Marks, Eye-Lines, and the Language of the Pull

Because you cannot hold a shot by luck, the camera department runs on marks. A mark is a known distance from the sensor plane to a point in the scene, taped on the floor for the talent, notched on the follow focus for the AC. A simple dialogue scene might have two marks: the actor delivers the first half of the line at Mark A, crosses, and lands the second half at Mark B. The AC has both distances tuned on the focus wheel and pulls between them on the actor's move.

Eye-lines matter because faces do. On almost every shot with a person in it, the eyes are the focus target. Not the nose, not the chest, the near eye. When an actor turns their head, the near eye can travel several inches closer to or farther from the lens without the actor moving their feet at all. The AC is tracking that, which is why you will see a good focus puller watching the performer's face and not the monitor during a take. They are reading the body for the move before it happens.

The tools that make this possible are worth their rental. A wireless follow focus system, a Preston, a cmotion, or a Tilta Nucleus on lighter jobs, gives the AC a calibrated hand unit with hard-marked distances and repeatable travel. A laser or ultrasonic rangefinder confirms distances fast between setups. A monitor with focus peaking helps, but peaking is a confidence check, not a substitute for having measured. The best AC on the best gear is still doing the fundamental thing by feel and prediction, because the plane is thin and the human is unpredictable.

The Margin-of-Error Math

Run the numbers across a few common commercial setups and the pattern is obvious.

A standard interview at 85mm, T2.8, subject 6 feet out on a full-frame sensor gives you roughly two and a half to three inches of total depth, split a little in front of the subject and a little behind. That is a workable margin for a seated subject who is not moving much. A good AC holds it without breaking a sweat, and a distracted one still loses the occasional take when the subject shifts.

Take that same 85mm to T1.4 for a moodier portrait and the total zone drops under an inch. Now a seated subject who leans into a point, a natural thing people do when they get animated, can walk their own eyes out of focus. The AC is riding the wheel continuously on what looks like a locked shot.

Push in tighter. A beauty close-up at 100mm, T2, 4 feet away, or a product macro at 100mm, T4, 2 feet away, and you are working with fractions of an inch. On a macro product shot the depth of field can be smaller than the product's own logo. There is no such thing as "set it and forget it" at those distances. Somebody is pulling.

Now go the other way. A wide master at 24mm, T4, 12 feet out on a Super 35 sensor gives you feet of depth, not inches. That is the setup where a producer looks at the shot and thinks focus is easy and the AC is overpaid. But the AC does not get to choose which shot they are worth on. They are on the crew for the T1.4 portrait and the 2-foot macro, and there is no version of the day where you hire a focus puller only for the hard shots. You carry the skill all day because the day contains shots that require it.

What a Good Focus Puller Is Worth

Focus pulling is a skilled trade with a real market rate. In US commercial production, a working 1st AC lands somewhere in the range of roughly $650 to $1,200 for a day, depending on the market, the format, union status, and how much gear management rides on top of the pull. In a major market on a union job the number is higher and governed by the IATSE Local 600 agreement. On a lean non-union commercial in a market like Dallas or Fort Worth, a strong freelance AC might book in the lower half of that range. Add wireless follow focus rental, a Preston or cmotion package runs real money per day on top, and the total cost of keeping focus reliable is a meaningful slice of a camera-department budget.

Now weigh that against the cost of not having it. A reshoot day on a commercial is not just the AC's rate you were trying to save. It is the location again, the talent again, the crew again, the client's calendar again, and the cratered trust that comes with telling a client the hero shot did not hold. On any job where a single unusable hero take blows the budget, the focus puller is the cheapest insurance on the call sheet. You are not paying for a knob-turner. You are paying for the fact that every take is in focus and you never have to think about it, which is the same reason nobody notices the job is being done.

The next time you see a piece of work with that clean, shallow, expensive-looking separation, know that somebody held a plane a couple of inches thick against a living, breathing, unpredictable subject, take after take, and made it look automatic.
